HIPAA compliant by design

Mycra doesn't just comply with HIPAA — the architecture makes violations impossible. Your encryption keys are generated in your browser. We never receive them, store them, or transmit them. We couldn't access your Protected Health Information even under court order — we don't have the keys.

Zero-knowledge architecture

Even if someone gained access to our infrastructure, they would find nothing — your data lives in your browser's local database, encrypted with keys that exist only on your device. There is no central database of patient records. There is nothing to breach.

Technical details

For those who want to look under the hood.

Encryption at rest
All stored data (session notes, client records, clinical history) is encrypted using AES-256-GCM with keys derived from your passphrase via PBKDF2 (600,000 iterations, SHA-256). Encryption and decryption happen entirely in your browser.
Video encryption
Video sessions use WebRTC with DTLS-SRTP for peer-to-peer encryption. Media streams are negotiated directly between your browser and your client's — video and audio never touch our servers at all, encrypted or otherwise.
Authentication
Mycra uses WebAuthn passkeys as the primary authentication method — no passwords stored anywhere. Your passkey lives in your device's secure enclave (Touch ID, Face ID, Windows Hello, or a hardware security key). From it, we derive an Ed25519 keypair that becomes your cryptographic identity. This key signs your data, encrypts your records, and proves you are you — without a server ever knowing your secret.
Infrastructure
Your practice data lives in your browser's local database (IndexedDB with SQLite). Syncing between your devices happens peer-to-peer using conflict-free replicated data types (CRDTs). No central server stores your records. No third-party analytics, no tracking pixels, no data shared with anyone.

How is this free?
Mycra was built because every therapist deserves access to secure, professional telehealth tools — regardless of their budget. We're funded by the belief that mental healthcare infrastructure shouldn't be a profit center. No ads, no data sales, no hidden monetization.
Will there ever be a paid tier?
The core platform — video sessions, notes, scheduling, client management — will always be free. If we add premium features in the future (like integrated billing or insurance processing), the foundation will remain free.
Is there a limit on sessions or clients?
No. Use Mycra for 1 client or 100. There are no artificial limits on sessions, storage, or features.
Do I need to sign a BAA?
Yes, and we make it easy. A Business Associate Agreement is available during setup. Mycra's zero-knowledge architecture means we never have access to PHI, but the BAA formalizes our commitment.

The story

Mycra started in 2018 as MycraTherapy — a simple idea that independent therapists deserved better tools. Not enterprise software crammed into a smaller box, but something designed from the ground up for the way therapists actually work.

In 2026, we rebuilt everything. New encryption architecture. New infrastructure. Same mission: give every therapist — whether in private practice, community mental health, or just starting out — a professional, secure, and completely free platform.

Mycra is not backed by venture capital. There are no investors pushing for monetization. The platform is free because access to secure telehealth tools shouldn't depend on your budget.
